John Bock

The Netherlands Media Art Institute presents solo show by the German artist John Bock. The artist will be present at the opening on May 12.

The exhibition presents a series of earlier and more recent videos and film installations that both condense and enlarge Bock’s performance pieces into an endless tour de force of narratives and permanent digressions.

John Bock is one of the most influential and relevant artists of his generation. His installations, videos and performances have been exhibited in some of the most prestigious group exhibitions and biennials world wide, including documenta 11 in Kassel, the Venice and Moscow Biennials and Manifesta 5 in San Sebastian. He has had solo shows at the Museum of Modern Art in New York (2000) and the ICA Institute of Contemporary Arts in London (2005), among other venues. John Bock was born 1965 in Gribbohm, Germany, and lives and works in Berlin.

John Bock is first and foremost a performance artist who creates entire universes animated by a kaleidoscopic profusion of objects, materials, fabrics and bizarre prostheses. His films and videos take their primary inspiration from reality, altering it through magnification or deformation. Through his installations, performances and videos Bock has built a playful world, where he mixes art references with theatre, economics and fashion. Everything seems to be connected and dispersed at the same time, in a universe founded on a dramatically personal (dis)order. A dizzying mix of the pseudo-scientific and aesthetic, and social and political commentary, Bock's works defy logic.

From May 12 till August 20 the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam is exhibiting the work Salon de Beton by John Bock as part of their exhibition 'Mapping the Studio'.
