press release

Galerie Gilla Lörcher | Contemporary Art is very pleased to present the third solo show of French artist John Cornu.

John Cornu works with an aesthetic inherited from minimalism and modernism (seriality, modularity), while maintaining a strong relation to context (historical, architectural) and a form of contemporary romanticism (a penchant for degradation, blindness, violence, and destruction).
With an interest for modern ruins, coercive systems, logics of power, and the passage of time, the artist imbues his productions with an atmosphere at once poetic and without compromise. Whether sculptural, pictorial, or installation-based, they blend paradoxical forces, setting up a multiplicity of meanings and readings.

A melancholic melody filters out from the exhibition « I'm a passenger ». It sketches a haunted portrait of our interior demons, the outline of a murky dream vibrating between violet purple and deep black.

French artist John Cornu, born 1976, lives and works between Rennes and Paris. His work has been shown in many art insitutions and galleries s.a.: Palais de Tokyo, Paris (F), Cneai, Paris (F), Musèe des Beaux-arts, Calais (F), Musée des Beaux-arts, Rennes (F), Musée Particulière, Brussels (BE), Musée Picasso, Paris (F), Biennale de Lyon (F), Sainsbury Center for Visual Arts, Norwich (UK), Circa, Montréal (CAN), ZQM, Berlin (D), Busan Biennale South Korea (KR), Biennale d`art contemporain de Jukoutsk (RUS), Ricou Gallery, Bruxelles (BE), Galerie Thaddeus Ropac, Paris (F), Galerie Anne de Villepoix, Paris (F), Galerie Gilla Lörcher, Berlin (D) a.o.
