press release

What started out as a simple idea and an editorial assignment - documenting people's opinion about the US invasion in Iraq - soon turned into a project about how the general public is misinformed and confused by the news they receive from the government.

In November 2004 Jonathan Hollingsworth set out on the streets of Los Angeles, and throughout Palmdale, Berkley and Orange County with markers and poster-board, to photograph. Hollingsworth chose to focus on individuals under 30, to bring attention to those who are, as Hollingsworth describes, "bearing the greatest burden of the war".

The opinions Jonathan Hollingsworth has gathered reflect the wide range of perceptions held throughout the country. In one portrait a woman states that on "September 11th Iraqi people killed thousands of innocent US citizens…" while another woman whose physical appearance is strikingly similar, doesn't understand why the US must invade a place that "didn't bomb the World Trade Center."

Ultimately these images reveal a nation and generation of Americans in turmoil.
