Every year since 1999, the "Insect of the Year" board of trustees selects a species of insect that should be more famous than it has been because of its particular importance to the ecosystem, its rarity, its aesthetic value or even its "vulgarity". The insect of the year should bring an exemplary species (and insects in general) closer to humans. Renowned entomologists, representatives of research institutions and nature conservation organizations make an important and difficult decision, choosing from about 35,000 insect species in Germany and select the one that is meant to represent the inconspicuous yet important folk of hexapoda among humans for a whole year.
