press release

Transmission gallery presents José Antonio Hernández-Díez, the first solo show in the UK of the acclaimed Venezuelan artist.

Hernández-Díez works with sculpture and photography creating a vernacular iconography inspired by the patriarchal, Catholic culture and traditions of his home country. While rooted in the particular context of local culture Hernández Díez engages with the language of consumption, identity and globalisation with dark and sardonic undertones.

Provocatively manipulating and physically reconfiguring domestic objects Hernández- Díez plays with scale and materiality investing the quotidian with smouldering anarchy and alienation of urban youth culture. Alluding to transience and impermanence, futility is a recurring theme within the work.

For his Transmission show Hernández-Díez will remake a version of his 1994 work “La Hermandad” (‘The Brotherhood”). Presenting gnarled fragments of skateboard made form fried pork fat, a common street snack in Latin America, Hernández-Diez will film a new video in the gallery space.

José Antonio Hernández-Díez was born in Caracas, Venezuala in 1964. He currently lives and works in Barcelona. A retrospective exhibition of his work travelled to SITE Santa Fe, the Palm Beach ICA, and the New Museum, New York in 2002-2003. He has also had solo exhibitons in Caracas, Sao Paulo and Madrid.
