press release

This exhibition comprises a survey of Grigely's works from the past ten years as well as a newly commissioned film by YBCA Wattis Artist-in-Residence Joseph Grigely. The artist, who became deaf at a young age, creates works that explore the multifaceted issues surrounding communication and language. His performance-based film will explore the nuances between seeing and hearing, and will involve rewriting the lyrics of three traditional Christmas carols so that they look correct on the lips, but when heard constitute a series of illogical misunderstandings. In addition to this new work, the exhibition features Grigely's early Conversations installations from 1994–98 and more recent projects such as the photographic Blue Berry Surprise and the sound piece You. Grigely will conduct a series of public programs to elaborate on related exhibition themes within the context of his residency activities. Pressetext
