press release

To see the room-size installations of the late Spanish sculptor Juan Muñoz is to enter a universe inhabited by peculiar figures, optical floors, and a disquieting sense that you—the spectator—are suddenly on view. Juan Muñoz was organized as a mid-career retrospective, but because of Muñoz’s unexpected death in August 2001, the exhibition has become a tribute to the incredible oeuvre of this internationally acclaimed artist. Included are nearly 60 sculptures, multi-figure installations, drawings, and paintings that span Muñoz's career from the mid-1980s to 2001. The exhibition is accompanied by a major catalogue with essays by exhibition curator Neal Benezra and MOCA Chief Curator Paul Schimmel, who is coordinating MOCA’s presentation.

Juan Muñoz was organized by the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Smithsonian Institution, Washington D.C., in association with The Art Institute of Chicago.

Corporate support for the exhibition was provided by Terra Networks, S.A. with major assistance from Aaron and Barbara Levine.

The exhibition catalogue was made possible in part by the Sociedad Estatal de Acción Cultural Exterior of Spain and Mr. Borja Coca.

Armstrong World Industries and Waterjet Works provided in-kind assistance with the special flooring installations.

The Los Angeles presentation has been made possible in part by The Sydney Irmas Exhibition Endowment; Audrey M. Irmas; Susan Bay-Nimoy and Leonard Nimoy; The MOCA Projects Council; E. Blake Byrne; Beatrice and Philip Gersh; and the Pasadena Art Alliance.
