press release

For her Art Now exhibition, Karin Ruggaber has made wall-based sculptural objects from an array of materials including silk, concrete and plaster.

Ruggaber has created a range of tile-like shapes that allude to cartoonish or geometric shapes but are not representational. The tactile and ornamental qualities of surfaces, as well as architectural facades are a source of reference for the artist. To produce the pieces, Ruggaber uses deliberately unpredictable casting processes to create subtle variations in texture and tone. In other works, artificial and natural fabrics are pinned or sewn together to make a complex collage of shapes suggestive of tailored details of clothing. The pieces are reminiscent of tapestry or medieval coats of arms. By placing these works in close proximity to each other, using the full height of the gallery wall, the act of display becomes a focus for this exhibition.

Ruggaber was born in 1969 in Stuttgart, Germany. She graduated from Chelsea College and Slade School of Art, London. Her solo exhibitions include greengrassi, London (2003 and 2005) and Rene Daniels and Karin Ruggaber, Bloomberg SPACE, London (2002). Group exhibitions include 60, Arts Council Collection, Yorkshire Sculpture Park (2006) and The Way We Work Now, Camden Arts Centre (2005).

Ruggaber lives and works in London. She has produced a number of artist’s publications and will publish a book during the course of the exhibition.
