Architecture lives by dialogue. In architecture, differently from the fine arts, engaging with the personal requirements and aspirations of your client is an indispensable condition for successful cooperation. Even if the future owners are, as a rule, laypersons, they have a decisive voice in design concepts connected with form, material and colour.

In the light of this considerable influence, the international architecture exhibition at the Bielefelder Kunstverein is being devoted to a particular topic: artists commissioning contemporary architecture. It uses a selection of building projects from Argentina, Germany, Great Britain, Italy and Switzerland as examples to illuminate the current interactions between architecture and art today. At the centre stand the meaning of artistic motivation and its effect on the building project. The presented works go into evidence pertaining to buildings organised in an essentially functional manner and also to experimental ones. They investigate the extent to which the collaboration between artists and architects leads to a shift in the architectural relations of design, construction and function, and which architectural qualities can come about through such particular collaboration.
