Landscape Confection

Landscape Confection features new and recent work from 13 emerging and established contemporary artists whose art has broadened the scope of landscape painting. Long considered one of the most “traditional” genres of Western art, landscape painting has been characterized by realistic or idealized representations of the natural world. Landscape Confection reflects the expansion of the genre to reflect both modern visual imagery and artists’ use of nontraditional materials to create imaginary, dreamlike landscapes. The 30 large-scale works that comprise the show use both conventional and unconventional media—paint, cloth, paper, needlework, metal and other materials—to adapt even the most traditional scenes into colorful and innovative abstractions. Many of the artists employ playful paint application and palettes of candy-coated colors that border on kitsch, giving rise to the exhibition’s title. The artists included in Landscape Confection – Rowena Dring, Pia Fries, Jason Gubbiotti, Jim Hodges, Laura Owens, Katie Preatt, Michael Raedecker, Neal Rock, Lisa Sanditz, Amy Sillman and Janaina Tschape – are ultimately involved in the current “reinvention” of painting. Their work evokes the history of landscape painting while toying with the adaptability of its conventions.

Landscape Confection is organized by Helen Molesworth, Chief Curator of the Wexner Center for the Arts at the Ohio State University. It will be accompanied by an extensive catalogue published by the Wexner Center for the Arts that includes an essay by Molesworth, reproductions of exhibited work, and documentation on the artists’ careers.
