press release

While the first part of L’Europe en devenir (Europe of the future) presented a great majority of artists connected to Switzerland, this second part gives carte blanche to the independent commissioner of the Neuer Berliner Kunstverein in Berlin, MARIUS BABIAS, to present the viewpoint of artists from “New Europe”.

Part 2 of L’Europe en devenir (Europe of the future) puts the focus on some European structural components that are decisive for the politics and identity of the future Europe. After the confrontation between the old East and Western blocks, we have now reached an intermediary stage characterised by a series of asymmetries: the economic decline of entire regions, the unresolved problems of migration and the social militarisation that is oppressing new forms of cultural and artistic criticism. “New Europe” is not only building itself by economical and political integration, but also and primarily by culture.

This event begins where “New Europe” is being defined less and less as an economic community, but more and more as a community of value and culture. Art and culture are producers without borders of new policies of expression and image and models of reflection that exceed old thought patterns and accelerate the European acculturation process. Artists from Eastern Europe in particular are wondering what new cultures of hybridisation, free identities and operational models could be invoked to (self)-define the Europe of the future and through their work, artists chosen for this part of the exhibition from Rumania, Bulgaria, Spain, Moldavia, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Finland and France are showing the reorganisation of the European identity.
