press release
This will be the first exhibition in a public gallery by Canadian artist Marcel Dzama’s (b. 1974 Winnipeg, lives in New York). Dzama is well known for his small-scale ink and watercolour drawings, which depict with an idiosyncratic humour, scenes of ambiguous relationships between figures, objects and events. His images reference a broad range of stylistic sources across high and low culture – from the illustrations of Beatrix Potter to MTV and comic strip characters; from film noir and science fiction to Surrealism and evoke the pathos of great literature. This major exhibition at Ikon will include over fifty drawings, new large-scale, multi-sheet ‘composite’ pieces, and sculpture and video work previously unseen.
