Matthias Hoch

During the month of February, the Rena Bransten Gallery will exhibit new photographs by German artist, Matthias Hoch.

Matthias Hoch's photographs of interiors and exteriors function both as a study of architectural detail and a commentary on the dehumanizing aspects of contemporary city planning. Often starkly monumental, his powerful compositions derive rhythm from sequences of elements and color fields, whether glass windows in an office building, or corrugated steel wall panels. Although photographed in cities throughout Europe, Hoch's focused approach decontextualizes his subject material, melding distinct individual features into a shared architectural vocabulary. Hoch's delight in capturing the unexpected or overlooked in cities is often humorously underlined by the works titles which divulge the general, if not specific, subject location.

Hoch was born in 1958, in Radebeul near Dresden, Germany and lives in Leipzig. His work has been the subject of solo shows internationally, including the forthcoming touring exhibition being organized by the Ludwig Forum, Aachen. Fotografien/Photographs, a book of selected works by Hoch, was published by Hatje Cantz in 2005.
