press release

Throughout his more than five decade career, avant-garde choreographer Merce Cunningham has teamed with such renowned visual artists as Andy Warhol, Frank Stella, Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg to create dynamic sets and costumes for his productions. This exciting exhibition is the first to focus on the pioneer modern choreographer’s collaborations with visual artists from1998 to the present, with a series of installations that present the actual sets and costumes created by artists such as Ernesto Neto, Charles Long, and Christian Marclay. Merce Cunningham: Dancing on the Cutting Edge will be presented in partnership with the Miami Performing Arts Center during its inaugural season, and will coincide with Merce in Miami, a large scale community engagement project that celebrates the life and work of Merce Cunningham through collaboration with a consortium of Miami performing arts institutions. Merce Cunningham: Dancing on the Cutting Edge, Part I is organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art and is curated by Bonnie Clearwater.

Merce Cunningham: Dancing on the Cutting Edge, Part II, which highlights the choreographer’s new collaboration with Miami artist Daniel Arsham and composer David Behrman, will be on view from April 21 – June 25, 2007 at MOCA at Goldman Warehouse.
