Mona Hatoum’s Map (1999) is a monumental world map consisting of 3,300 pounds of clear glass marbles. Born in Beirut in 1952 to a family of Palestinians living in exile, Hatoum left Lebanon for London in 1975, and became known in the early 1980s for a series of performance and video pieces that focused on the body. Acutely aware of issues of national borders, Hatoum has created a map that erases political boundaries at the same time it destabilizes the floor that viewers walk on, creating a double aspect of fragility and danger.

Map was purchased by MOCA in 2001 with funds provided by the Kwon Family Foundation in honor of Audrey M. Irmas.
