press release

International Project Space is pleased to present work by internationally acclaimed artists Michael Krebber and Michaela Eichwald who will be exhibiting together for the first time in a UK institution.

Krebber and Eichwald were both key figures in the Cologne art scene in the 1980’s and 1990’s at a time when the city was recognized internationally as the epicenter of German contemporary art.

Eichwald’s practice shares many qualities with Krebber’s work from a formal perspective encompassing painterly gestures with collage through to their display methods. However, Eichwald provides a clue-guided narrative through pieces that are simultaneously enigmatic. Her resin pieces allude to a sense of haste and indeterminacy which is coupled with an ‘odds and ends’ aesthetic hinting towards a degree of alchemy. This has led to Eichwald’s works being anti-monuments, likened to the encasement of prehistoric insects in amber (fossilized resin).

Krebber’s works often defy conventional form, avoiding the classification of ‘painting’ and often manifesting in a multi-faceted vocabulary. He adopts a variety of mediums including newspaper/comic pages and industrially produced coloured/patterned fabrics. His introduction of wooden stretchers and altered objects underlines an increasingly physical gesture to be read as an activity. Furthermore, Krebber expands the boundaries of the picture plane by allowing the painting to explore its environment in a sculptural manner. We can conclude this from the nature of display Krebber adopts, from traditional gallery hanging to the placement of works propped up against a wall.

To accompany Eichwald’s and Krebber’s display, Ruairiadh O’Connell’s contribution to the NOTICES section of the gallery will be present an image of a carpet from a Las Vegas casino. Designed aggressively, the carpet’s pattern aims to keep gamblers awake and functions here as a stimulus, a back rub, for visitors before they enter the main exhibition.
