press release

Clementine Gallery announces the opening of Blubbering, an exhibition of new work in the Main Gallery by Neil Farber. The show will run from March 23–April 21, 2007. A reception for the public will be held on Friday, February, March 23d, from 6-8 PM.

For Blubbering, Farber presents a series of mixed media paintings on paper. The exhibition's title piece is a large-scale work composed of ten individual sheets of paper and arranged in three framed panels. Wildly chromatic and dense with detail, Blubbering exemplifies the artist's use of pattern and repetition to achieve a chaotic effect. In it, masses of tiny round-headed men pour from the belly of a wrecked quarantine ship into the sea below. These figures, whose many identical forms proliferate throughout Farber's work, are applied in delicate lines of watercolor, acrylic, and ink, and then daubed with thick blots of gesso and matte medium. This process results in a rich three-dimensional surface that allows Farber's character's to blur together into surreal, almost cellular shapes.

Neil Farber has had solo exhibitions in Brussels, Copenhagen, and London, Vancouver, Padova, and Santa Monica. He is a member of the Royal Art Lodge, and was featured in the traveling exhibition "Ask the Dust", in 2004. Blubbering will be his fourth solo exhibition at Clementine.
