New Installations, Artists in Residence

The Mattress Factory is pleased to announce its upcoming exhibition, New Installations, Artists in Residence: Boyle; Holland; McConnell; Mitchell; Peterson, Drain, Brown; Reichlin; Sawyer and Yamamoto opening October 26th, 2003, and on view through June 27th, 2004.

Jeremy Boyle received his B.F.A. degree at the University of Illinois, Chicago. Boyle is a sound artist based in Pittsburgh whose work bridges the boundary between visual art and the recording studio.
Rebecca Holland is Adjunct Professor of Studio Art at the College of Santa Fe, NM and received her M.F.A. from the University of Massachusetts at North Dartmouth. Holland creates lyrical adaptations to architectural spaces, using delicate materials like gold leaf or natural materials. Holland likes to call attention to the architectural history, natural light and sense of smell of her spaces, revealing mystery and discovery.

Liza McConnell received her B.F.A. from Cornell University and her M.F.A. from The Ohio State University. McConnell makes illusion-producing schemes to project imagery with low-tech mechanisms and modest materials. Her recent work involves low-tech projection devices/sculptures, operating on the principle of a camera obscura, that produce real-time landscape imagery from lights, lenses and model-scale props.

Curtis Mitchell received his M.F.A. from Yale University and resides in New York City. Mitchell works with both 2-dimensional objects and with found objects culled from the detritus of the urban landscape. He destroys these everyday objects by tearing, bleaching, breaking or burning them and reassembles them to convey a particularly intense message that is never nostalgic.

Ara Peterson, Jim Drain and Eamon Brown's recent collaborations have focused on large-scale video and sculpture installations. Peterson and Drain are graduates of the Rhode Island School of Design and former members Forcefield.

Ann Reichlin received her B.F.A. from the Rhode Island School of Design and her M.F.A. from the University of Colorado, Boulder. Reichlin's work deals with issues of territory and control. Using architectural space as a vehicle for her ideas she explores the relationship between structure and light and the tension between fragility and threat. Reichlin resides in Ithaca, New York.

Margo Sawyer is Head of Sculpture at The University of Texas at Austin. Sawyer received her B.A. from the Chelsea School of Art in London, and her M.F.A. in sculpture from Yale University. Sawyer’s installations focus on placing the viewer within spaces of reflection and contemplation. She creates large-scale installations inspired by observations of historic and contemporary sites of sacred architecture.

Lynne Yamamoto is presently Assistant Professor of Art at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts and was born and raised in Honolulu. She received an M.A. from New York University and participated in the Whitney Independent Study Program. Yamamoto's work derives from her Japanese-American heritage, and she creates installations based on the lives of Japanese immigrants to America. Pressetext
