Other Mens Flowers

venetia kapernekas gallery is pleased to present a selection of Other Men’s Flowers, a publication by the Paragon Press of text works by 15 London based artists. The project was initiated by Joshua Compston/Factual Nonsense, who chose the title in memory of Viscount Wavell’s anthology of the same name, originally published as a tribute to the relationship between art and war.

“The project was produced as an exciting and innovative publication that intrinsically embodies the elegant but underused printing technique of letterpress printing. The publisher and curator are delighted that the participants ‘ran with the bulls’ and came up with multifarious intriguing and exciting solutions to the parameters of the project. They produced works that responded to the given brief of a text piece letterpress printed structure that to the uninformed outsider might have looked confining in scope, but proved not to be so when placed in the hands of artists blessed with pungent perspective capabilities and active intellect, thus bending the given ‘command’ and twisting and turning it on its head.” –from the curator’s notes.

Other Men’s Flowers was launched on the 23rd of June 1994 in London at Factual Nonsense. The show was then exhibited in the Kunst Hof, Mitte, Berlin; the Independent Art Space; and as part of the retrospective of the Paragon Press exhibition “Contemporary British Art in Print 1986 – 1995” at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, which then traveled to the Yale Center for British , New Haven, Connecticut, December of 1995.
