For MACRO Tayou has created a work entitled: Omnes viae Romam ducunt (All roads lead to Rome), the genesis of which is a letter written by the artist to his mother in Cameroon, inviting her to come to Rome.
The installation builds itself around the cardinal act of waiting for her response and eventual visit. The walls of the exhibition room become like the pages of a dairy; cluttered with photographs and three film projections, images taken from family life.
Beneath these images, the text of the letter scrolls along the walls. The letter is more than an invitation to the Eternal City.
Tayou writes that he will accompany his mother, a devout Catholic, to the Vatican where she can attend mass with the Pope.
Due to the uncertainty of her willingness to make this great journey the exhibition remains deliberately suspended, it’s conclusion as of yet undetermined.
As a sequitur, a short film, Finissage, has been proposed to meticulously describe the preparations for this tentative and prospective voyage that may remain nothing more than dream.
