press release

Collaborations have long been essential to artistic development, offering points of view not seen in single-artist works and bringing new approaches to the creative experience.

Perspectives 144: Amalgama explores the nature of collaboration through recent works by both established and transitory teams of Houston contemporary artists and by single artists who work directly with the audience, making the viewer a collaborator. The exhibition examines the continuing need for an open creative process and illustrates the growing number and influence of group projects in recent years. Many of the works featured in Amalgama involve public participation, an aspect of this exhibition that will add to the audience’s awareness of the collaborative approach. Among the artists/groups to be included are collectives such as Otabenga Jones, and artists Vasco Araújo, Rachel Cook, Paul Druecke, Selven O’Keef Jarmon, Laura Lark and Cindy Loehr.

Throughout the duration of Amalgama, the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston’s Perspectives gallery will host changing and ongoing group projects specifically designed for the exhibition.

Perspectives 144: Amalgama is co-organized by Curator Paola Morsiani and Director of Public Programs Paula Newton, and will be accompanied by a Perspectives-format catalogue with essays by the curators, reproductions of exhibited work, and documentation on the artists’ careers.
