press release

Opening Reception: Saturday, January 12th, 3-5 pm

The Monte Clark Gallery Toronto is pleased to announce a group show entitled Portraits.

Portraiture as a genre is one of the oldest subjects in art history and it continues to intrigue and fascinate today. The existential essence and likeness of a person is captured and represented through portraiture as is their personality, character, style, etc. Exploring this classic theme in a variety of media will be Roy Arden, Karin Bubas, Douglas Coupland, Chris Gergley, Greg Girard, Owen Kydd, Mark Lewis, Brad Phillips, and Derek Root.

Produced from stills of the 80's classic primetime drama Dynasty, Karin Bubas has painted a series of gorgeous watercolours which highlight the fashion and angst of the period. From a body of work photographed in Hong Kong and Japan during the late seventies and early eighties, Greg Girard captures the transient and yet regimented life of sailors during this time. Owen Kydd takes us to Mission, BC, a town north of Vancouver. His small video of sketches presents the various inhabitants of this rural community. Familiar works include the haunting portraits of Derek Root and Roy Arden, as well as the contemporary renaissance video portrait of Molly Parker by Mark Lewis.
