Public Image, Private Lives: Family, Friends and Self in Photography delves beneath the surface of familiar (and some unfamiliar) images in Australian and international photography, to highlight close connections between the photographer and subject, whether they be friends, family members or the photographers themselves.

Spanning a period from the nineteenth century to the present, it includes photographers as diverse as Julia Margaret Cameron, Harold Cazneaux, Max Dupain, J.H. Lartigue, and Andy Warhol.

The exhibition was inspired by a group of newly acquired photographs by Carol Jerrems – including her iconic image Vale Street, 1975 – and also includes many other Australian artists from the 1970s to now, among them Pat Brassington, Sue Ford, Mark Kimber, Ann Newmarch, Ian North, Trent Parke and William Yang.
