Eva Winkeler is pleased to present the second solo show of New York based artist Rashawn Griffin. Rashawn Griffin is turning the gallery space into social landscapes and personal narrative environment using found objects and personal effects that introduce evocative hints of place and character. The dialogue between sculpture, painting and drawing leaves the artists as a poet of carefully arranging abstract and narrative impulse to reflect on the theatre of live. One major fabric covered panel, crudely hand stitched and stained is dominating the front space of the gallery. Most of his larger scale work include denim, a material with universal associations encompassing both high fashion and manual labour. The second large piece is constructed of hanging tassels, being arranged like a sculpture, representing intimacy on the one hand but also convey a certain social class characteristic. Additionally Griffin will present three paintings on canvas, representing more the character of a classical drawing. In contrast to this several small wood based collage and paintings will lead through the exhibition. Rashawn Griffin was born in 1980 in Los Angeles lives and works in New York. He received a MFA from Yale University in 2005. He was a 2006 resident of the Studio Museum Harlem, His work was included in the 2008 Whitney Biennial, at the Studio Museum in Harlem, in a group exhibition "Freeway Balconies" at the Deutsche Guggenheim Berlin curated by Collier Schorr.. His latest group show was last summer at Arndt&Partner, Zürich. In spring 2009 Griffin is in the Artist in Residence Program of Whitney Museum.
