press release

When Tsao and Kotinkaduwa approached me with the idea of doing something in their space, I thought they must be confusing me with somebody else. I thought I was the gallery. The reason I opened Reena Spaulings Fine Art in the first place was because I thought the only sincere way to be an artist anymore was to be a dealer.

Then it hit me: why not just let go for once? So I’m really giving it up this time. Painting, music: I can’t keep it to myself anymore. I’m hoping we can all push this thing forward together… faster, harder. My art, which I call “hardcore art,” is all out there, full-on. This kind of energy cannot be contained. I haven’t enjoyed myself so much since I was a club kid.

Still, I can get jealous and paranoid. I got so hurt the other night in the bar when I could tell you were holding something back from me. I excused myself, went to the bathroom, took a hard look at myself in the mirror and realized that I only truly have power when I’m open. So I’m putting my world in your hands. You open yourself to this, make a place for me, and I totally appreciate it. 50% for Tsao-Kotinkaduwa, 50% for Reena Spaulings. This means half the work, half the money and half the thrills. I’m doing this in the name of openness and in the name of togetherness. Let’s make this thing work.

Love, Reena Spaulings

Reena Spaulings Fine Art was established in 2003 in Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Since its inception the space has not only acted as the mercurial headquarters for a roster of international artists but also as the fictitious muse for a core group of NY-based artists, writers and musicians. Haswellediger & Co. will present her first solo exhibition in New York.
