Resurfaced

Resurfaced explores paintings that surpass the expectations of the rectangular canvas. The featured works function at the boundary between painting and sculpture through the employment of unconventional supports, shaped canvas, and unconventional materials. Resurfaced includes work from the past decade by two generations of New York, Washington D.C. and Boston area artists including: Sam Cady, Sam Gilliam, Elizabeth Murray, Gina Ruggeri, Katy Stone, Bill Thompson, and Roger Tibbetts.

Resurfaced presents paintings that extend beyond the second dimension and incorporate sculptural qualities. Since the middle of the twentieth century, shaped supports have been in and out of vogue, yet the opportunity to push the idea further has always existed. In recent years, contemporary artists have furthered experimentation on both flexible and rigid supports, employing unexpected materials, such as Mylar, foam core, and epoxy, as well as developing new approaches to canvas structures. The selection of works chosen for Resurfaced shows the employment of the shaped canvas or three-dimensional support to achieve both realistic and abstract ends.
