press release

The Showroom is pleased to announce that it has commissioned Richard Hughes to make a new body of work for presentation at the gallery between 6 October and 14 November this year.

Richard Hughes¹ practice combines meticulous attention to detail with a slacker aesthetic. Taking the source material and means to produce his work from the most banal of urban environments, Hughes interjects high art references to create engaging and powerful sculptural works.

In parts reminiscent of Claes Oldenburg¹s soft sculpture, Hughes¹ work has a gritty materiality that is derived from his engagement with both the material substance of his found objects and their site or location. These works demonstrate a confluence of colour, texture, form, and the surrounding environment that Hughes uses as a kind of material within the work itself. For his exhibition at The Showroom, Hughes will indirectly address the prosaic history of the space using his special talent for transformation and making something unexpected and spectacular from the everyday.

Richard Hughes has made solo projects for Roma, Roma, Roma, Rome, Bluecoat Gallery, Liverpool and Turnpike Gallery, Manchester. In 2003, he was the winner of the EAST International Award at the Norwich Gallery, Norwich. His project for The Showroom will be his first solo show in London. Born in Birmingham in 1974, Hughes currently lives and works in London. Pressetext
