NEW YORK —The Tilton Gallery is pleased to present a group exhibition of painting, sculpture and video by 19 promising young artists culled from the top MFA programs on the East Coast.

“School Days” includes works in widely diverse styles representing the best of the graduate programs at Columbia, Hunter and Yale.

At a moment in the art world when every gallerist is looking to find the next hot art star before they've even finished graduate school, the Tilton Gallery is taking a more open approach, showcasing a cross-section of innovative work by a new generation of artists. The exhibition will be on view throughout the gallery's two floors from January 15th through February 25th. The opening reception at Tilton's new space on the Upper East Side will take place on Saturday, January 14, from 6 to 8 pm.

“We spent several months combing the graduate schools, searching for talent,” said gallery director Janine Cirincione. “What we found was some of the best new work produced in years and we're thrilled to be showing it in our own version of an open studio.”

Artists represented in the exhibition include Keltie Ferris, Natalie Frank, Logan Grider, Evan Gruzis, Michelle Hailey, Ashley Hope, Ezra Johnson, Iva Kafri, Titus Kaphar, Rachel Kravets, Andrea Merkx, Emmy Mikelson, Dane Nester, Robert Snead, Tavares Strachan, Kianja Strobert, Max Toth, Leonid Tsvetkov, and Aya Uekawa.

“Tilton and his staff went to the best MFA programs in the country, and from there they chose work that says something significant about the time we live in and also pushes boundaries. To be included in a show such as this is truly exciting,” said Titus Kaphar, a second-year Yale MFA student, whose historically inspired paintings are visual quotations that reconstruct the narratives in which their characters play a part.

Andrea Merkx and Emmy Mikelson will show video works, Tavares Strachan will present sculptural work, while the remaining artists, half of them women, will exhibit paintings, both abstract and figurative.
