press release

Växjö Konsthall is proud to present the exhibition Shock Strike Blow / Rough History which brings together two up-and-coming young artists – Merzedes Sturm-Lie & Alisa Yoffe. The exhibition is based on existential ideas about the world today. A here and now. The exhibition moves freely through the individual’s relationship to memory, the present, and a possible future.

Merzedes Sturm-Lie (born 1991 in Denmark) divides her time between Stockholm and Brussels. Her work touches on questions about memory and history, and their relationship to the self. Europe’s history is woven together with the personal in her artwork. By extension it is also about the battle between violence and civilization in a more existential, human way. This is Sturm-Lie’s largest solo show at a public art institution thus far.

Alisa Yoffe (born 1987 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan), lives and works in Moscow, and is today one of the most acclaimed artists in Russia. She has an energetic way of painting with attitude that is about the here and now. Her paintings are not only a comment on today’s Russia, but also a kind of veritable battlefield for the struggle to survive and to discover another possible society. Yoffe has seldom been shown outside of Russia, and never had a solo show outside of Russia until now.

The exhibition will open on March 11, inaugurated by Martin Schibli, curator for the exhibition and artistic leader for Växjö Konsthall, with artists present.
