press release

Featuring highlights from MOCA's permanent collection, Sign Language examines how artists have appropriated the forms and conventions of commercial signage toward their own artistic purposes. Recognizing the shared goals of both art and advertising to captivate and communicate, the artists in the exhibition highlight, problematize, and comment on the transmission of a message through signs, both textually and graphically. Incorporating a wide variety of media and genres, from sculpture to painting, photography, and bookmaking, and ranging from the 1950s to the present, the exhibition features works from the permanent collection by Claes Oldenburg, Robert Frank, Andy Warhol, Ed Ruscha, Lee Friedlander, Robert Barry, Barbara Kruger, Dave Muller, and Sam Durant. The exhibition is organized by MOCA Assistant Curator Michael Darling. Pressetext
