Spencer Tunick: Beyond the City

Hales Gallery is pleased to announce ‘Beyond the City’, a solo show by Spencer Tunick. The show focuses on bodies in a natural landscape rather than his better known urbanscapes. The works in this exhibition explore ideas which link Tunick to Land Art of the 1960’s and ‘70’s.

Over the past ten years New York based artist Spencer Tunick has developed a series of works, using large groups of naked people as interventions in pre-selected natural sites. The bodies become material for exploring elements of these various locations, articulating the rise and fall of the land and adding a new dimension to rocky out-crops, hot springs, woods and deserts.

Tunick utilizes environmental elements, such as dust storms and dappled light through tree canopies, as compositional elements of his installations and photographs. When looking at Tunick’s work, these occurrences create atmosphere and emphasise the performance-based nature of his work.

Tunick has had two solo shows with Hales gallery previously; Naked States (1999) a series of works taken across the states of America and Nude Adrift (2002/3) a series of works made whilst Tunick toured the continents of the world. These series have explored notions of the human body in a site and national attitudes towards the naked body in a public environment.

Spencer Tunick’s installations and shows have been organised widely over the world, most recently in 2004 at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo and Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland. Other solo shows and installations include ‘Nude Adrift’, Institut de Cultura de Barcelona, Spain (2003), ‘Spencer Tunick’, Musee d’Art Contemporain de Montreal, Quebec (2003) and XXV Bienal de Sao Paulo, Brazil (2002). Tunick’s installations have also taken place at The Saatchi Gallery, London, 2003 and Selfridges, London, 2003.
