press release

Watercolour is the theme of the large summer group exhibition at Amos Anderson Art Museum. The multitude of methods used in the selected works of the exhibition brings forth the essence of watercolour, along with its technical possibilities. Watercolour art fills four floors of the museum. Among the more classical watercolour paintings, technical experiments and playful, innovative works challenge the viewer's preconceptions of this method of painting.

The exhibition includes works from twenty Finnish front row artists, each with their own conception of watercolour art and individual style. Some work mainly with traditional watercolour technique, while others use watercolour as a vehicle of experimentation and extension of their expression. The irreversibility of watercolour makes the technique challenging, but simultaneously very enchantingly immediate. This exhibition includes a versatile selection of works from illustrated travel logs to rice paper snowmen, from delicate apple flowers to collages and sketches. Some of the works are completed at the museum and some artists have painted together. The concept of watercolour has been innovatively stretched all the way to video and installation art.

Splätsh! is a joyous reminder of how the simple combination of pigment, water and paper can open endless artistic possibilities. A book written by Erkki Pirtola and published by Maahenki is released to accompany the exhibition.
