press release

This selected survey of the work of Vancouver-based Stan Douglas includes three recent films/video projections and approximately 40 color photographs. Douglas combines cinematic techniques with new technologies to produce images that examine history through different viewpoints and pose questions not addressed by more traditional methods. Using the languages of photography, television, and film, Douglas addresses complex issues of colonization, urban development, and mass media. His work has been exhibited internationally, including the 1997 Johannesburg Biennale, Documenta X, and Sculpture Projects Munster. Organized by the Vancouver Art Gallery, the exhibition is coordinated by MOCA Senior Curator Ann Goldstein.

The Clients Presented in the Ahmanson Auditorium are screenings selected by Stan Douglas of three episodes from The Clients (1968), a Vancouver-produced CBC dramatic television series. The Clients was the model in style and structure for Douglas' work Win, Place or Show (1998).
