Superscope seeks to reinvigorate 'end-game' reductive painting by exploding the medium of paint outwards. Within this re-contextualisation (which acknowledges the recent histories of ‘support/surface’ and ‘postprocess’ painting) the artists here both reference and challenge what it ‘means’ to construct a painting within the framework of a ‘layer upon layer’ activity. Superscope brings together both established and emerging artists without falling into the routines of expressionism, formalist abstraction or quotation. By retaining a conversation with paint, Superscope explores the boundless, overlapping possibilities of sculptural, object and installation based work. Conventional systems of figure/ground processes are rebuilt, reconfigured and revitalised through a celebratory vivaciousness on the one hand (Janssen, Matthews, Münster, Stubbs, Thuring) and a calculatedly violent restructuring on the other (Kloosterboer, Lyons, Secunda, Simpson). Elements and traces of both distinctions, though, can often be witnessed across all of the works.

In this highly form-conscious exhibition, dark humour, obsessiveness and child-like playfulness are called on to investigate the multi-layered and shared narratives of painting now.
