press release

The second installment of Synth Nights’ intergenerational electronic music series features recent and vintage works by legendary composer David Behrman, including, on Friday, Runthrough (1968, for homemade synthesizers and light-controlled mixers), Cello with Melody-driven Electronics (1974, for cello with pitch-sensors and triangle-wave generators) and Useful Information (2005, for voices and electronics); and, on Saturday, View Finder (for guitar and laptop), Long Throw (2007, for piano, viola and laptop) and Open Space with Brass (2011, for three trumpets and three trombones, cello and live multi-channel electronics.) Performing with Behrman will be Okkyung Lee (22nd and 23rd), Jenny Lin, John King, Jesse Stiles and TILT Brass (23rd only).

In counterpoint, on March 22, Ben Vida collaborates with Greg Davis to present a new work, Tripartite Node, utilizing a hybrid computer/analog synthesizing setup designed for real-time composition and centralized control-source improvisations. Tripartite Node represents the duo’s most recent foray into systems-derived group composition.

Joining Behrman on March 23, Sergei Tcherepnin and Woody Sullender will present a new piece continuing their work with building theatrical physical environments for their live electronic music. In this work they invite Okkyung Lee to interact with and activate specific aspects of the composition. This program is made possible by Jerome Foundation, Anthony Creamer, The Amphion Foundation, Inc., Mary Flagler Cary Charitable Trust, The Aaron Copland Fund for Music, and with public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs and theNew York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.
