Teresa Hubbard (Dublin, 1965) and Alexander Birchler (Baden, 1962) have been working together as an artistic twosome for over ten years. Their early works focused on sculpture, Performance Art, photography and installations. They later evolved to the creation of meticulously fashioned stage settings, which continue to make up an essential part of their artistic expression today. They are currently working in different media like video and photography through which they invent and construct stories based on an installation set smack dab in the middle of reality, yet at the same time evoking an enigmatic and poetic world. In Eight, for instance, a trivial event such as a little girl’s birthday, provides the backdrop which brings a logical narration face to face with an illogical situation in time and space.

The title of the video refers to the celebration of a little girl’s eighth birthday. Her birthday party in the garden has been spoiled by the rain. All around are the remains of what must have been a children’s party – balloons, coloured lights, plastic plates and cups and a birthday cake that is soaking wet. The little girl bursts onto the bleak scene and cuts a piece of birthday cake for herself and goes back into the house with the camera following her moves.
