THE HOSTESS NEVER LIES - A performance series

Vogt Gallery is pleased to present "The Hostess Never Lies," a series of performances curated by Anne Apparu. The series will take place throughout the fall with five performances during Performa 11.

Participating artists focus strongly on performative arts as their way of expressing themselves. They have performed at New York venues such as PS1, Brooklyn Museum, The Kitchen, Performa biennial, The Sculpture Center, MoMA, New Museum, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, as well as at CAHM Houston, KW Institute of Contemporary Art Berlin, Palais de Tokyo Paris and Deutsche Guggenheim Berlin.

Ann Liv Young presents her “Sherry Show”. Her most well known character offers therapeutical advice that can set free subversive energies. “Sherry is a sort of everywoman but better” says Young.

NEXT NIKKI is a musical and performance collaborative featuring Jeremy Parker and Cat Hartwell. Next Nikki is developing an evolving musical that introduces a new section to the storz with each performance. On September 10 Niki’s tale will continue with the addition of “Wild”. The artist duo gave their debut in February 2011 at MoMA PS1 for Meet You For Tea.

Rachel Mason will perform a series of musical vignettes based on the story of the volcanic eruption of mount Vesuvius. She creates surreal rock operas together with her ensemble “Little Band of Sailors”. Mason’s work has been featured in publications including The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Flash Art, Art in America, Art News and Artforum.

Japanese artist Yuko Kodama will present her body in the form of an azuki (red) bean dessert in the project “Eat Me Please…”. This will be Kodama’s performance debut. Jen Denike will perform her “Ghost Dance”, a hypnotic circular dance, a cross-over of a spiritual, ecstatic ritual and a modern dance of endurance. Jen DeNike was part of Performa 2009.

Aphrodite Navab performs as Super East-West woman her Sufi dance. The Superman figure of popular Western culture is transformed into a Superwoman whose blue chador turns into a cape of agency.

Agathe Snow presents her piece “The hostess never lies” that served as inspiration for the series of performances. It is a solo piece of enthralling quality that lets the audience be part of an apocalyptic and yet intimate soliloquy.

Pete Drungle is a composer, pianist and sound designer. He made music together with Yoko Ono as well as the Kronos Quartet. Drungle is part of the “conceptual social club” called The Prompt that was founded at Performa 2009 and featured a series of five performances during the biennial.

NNCK is a seven-member free-form improvisational musical collective from New York City. Over the last 15 years they have explored how to combine Duchamp’s tabu with Japanese ghost mythology as well as LSD and psychedelic consciousness, further lovecraftian phantasmagoria and Kazimir Malevitch’ suprematism.

Anne Apparu is a multifunctional cook involved with the well being of society. She feeds with love, purpose, and dedication. At her table, where exchanges happen in a familiar manner, there is no hierarchy: "You are all my favorites." All of the performers featured in the series emerge from Apparu’s circle of cherished guests.

In the winter of 2011, Apparu and Beth Cooke opened Yella Yell, an experimental space for performative art in downtown Manhattan's Financial District. She hosted “Meet You For Tea” at PS1, presented “A Difficult Fairytale” at Hendershot Gallery, and was invited to shoot "There Are No Recipes," a natural cooking video project for the New Museum's "Festival of Ideas." Over the preceding three years she ran "The 18th Restaurant," a once a month underground pop up dinner.
