press release

Chung King Project is proud to present a solo exhibition of Tom Chamberlain. Tom Chamberlain makes paintings and drawings slowly. They are constructed through a painstaking accumulation of successive layers gradually congealing into visibility.

A process of repetition is used not to any certain end, but rather towards a state of imminence or nearness. Yet they threaten erasure through this process of addition. Like an over exposed photograph, they approach the possibility of blankness or blackness. Their surface is unyielding, elusive. As a consequence the paintings and the time embedded within them withhold themselves, prompting an encounter on the verge of unravelling. Presence and duration fluctuate. The paintings are looked through as much as at: a projective as much as receptive action whereby both they and the viewer are unsteadied by the time spent before them.

A graduate of The Royal College of Arts, London, Tom Chamberlain was nominated for Becks Futures in 2002. A year later, his work was included in "Shimmering Substance" curated by Barry Schwabsky and Catsou Roberts at Arnolfini, Bristol (traveled to Cornerhouse, Manchester).
