press release

In the spring Bonniers Konsthall presents a solo exhibition by the artist and architect Tomás Saraceno, the 2010 Bonniers Konsthall guest artist. Tomás Saraceno occupies the entire gallery with his utopian installations, which combine science, art and architecture. This is the first major presentation of this internationally renowned artist in Europe.

In collaboration with spider researchers and astrophysicists, Tomás Saraceno has spent several years developing the 400 cubic metre installation that is exhibited at Bonniers Konsthall. Am enormous model of the poisonous spider the Black Widow’s web, the point of departure for the new work is how scientists use images of spiders' webs to describe the origin and structure of the universe. The gigantic spider’s web, especially made for the main gallery of Bonniers Konsthall, consists of elastic black rope which will span floor to ceiling.

Tomás Saraceno’s installation for Bonniers Konsthall is a development of the work that the artist presented at the 53rd Venice Biennale in 2009: Galaxy Forming along Filaments, like Droplets along the Strands of a Spider’s Web. The new work is accompanied by drawings, photographs and texts that provide a unique insight into Tomás Saraceno’s working process and art. In addition, the exhibition includes 15 older works by the artist.

In conjunction with the exhibition, Bonniers Konsthall will produce a comprehensive publication, including essays by the researchers and curators involved in the project, as well as a programme of evening events focusing on the meeting of art, architecture and science.

By inviting a guest artist every year, Bonniers Konsthall enables the creation of new works. The artist is offered the opportunity to work on site in our guest studio and produce exhibitions exclusively for Bonniers Konsthall. Previous guest artists include Gunilla Klingberg (2009), Michael Beutler (2008), Monica Bonvicini (2007) and Gabriel Lester (2006).
