press release

Stroom Den Haag has invited the artist Ton Schuttelaar (1972) into its project space on the Toussaintkade. Schuttelaar is the initiator and organizer of ‘Atelier as Supermedium' (Studio as Supermedium), a project for which he converted his studio on the outskirts of The Hague into a museum-like space. Parallel to, and certainly not separate from, this project he is active as an artist in his own right. In both capacities he is interested in making exhibitions, in the status of objects, in the circumstances in which meaning takes shape, in the relationship between space and program.

The raw material for the exhibition ‘for this great fire' consists of an archive of tens of thousands of photographs Schuttelaar has collected over the past few months. From this archive he has selected a number of photographs based on social, socio-economic and religious principles. The photographs in turn generate objects, most of them ready-mades. The focus in ‘for this great fire' is not on the artistic value of the objects in the exhibition. Strictly speaking there is nothing in the space which is interesting in its own right. The separate elements, the trivial and familiar objects derive their meaning from the context of the installation, raising questions and forcing the audience to take a closer look.

The opening reception on October 19 is followed by the opening of Atelier als Supermedium # 09 ‘Printed Circuit' at at 8 pm. Address: Sammersweg 2, The Hague / Rijswijk. At 7.30 pm a bus will depart from Stroom, Toussaintkade to the Sammersweg. At 11 pm a bus will take the visitors back to the center of The Hague.
