press release

In the light of the twenty years of yore, we feel the need to reflect upon the history and break away from the inert mindset. It is the justice, objectivity and calmness that give a rational correction to the time of insanity. We finally gained the speech power after a trial-and-error period. And today we are on the rational-critical road waving goodbye to the naivety of the past twenty years. That is the reason why we pay a tribute to the 85 movement, and the 85 as a prefix shows the inevitable shift in the history of contemporary Chinese art.

*Though the 85 movement didn’t leave behind some landmark work in the art history, it lit the fire of Chinese contemporary art, chronicled as a brilliant chapter. At present many 85 veterans are still playing an active role in the art community, contributing themselves to the progress of the culture and art.

Artists of this exhibition mostly have participated in the 85 movement.
