WINTERLY COLD

The exhibition 'Winterly cold' include a choice of works which subject matter is 'feeling cold' or 'getting it warm'. In each work an aspect related to wintertime in some way or the other is shown. On the other hand the participating artists have not dealt with this subject of winter cold at all. The influence of the gallerist as curator is again at stake here. An exhibition curated like this seems to be right, yet without being 'true' in thematic sense. This is what this show is about.

About 30 works of artists from six countries of Europe as well as from the United States occupy all spaces in the gallery. Entering the front space the visitor is greeted by Wurst Eigenhaut of Helgi Thorsson, a touching dwarf offers a glass of Wodka with Turkisch dried figs, crystal drops of Fridfinnsson stream down straight from ceiling to floor, a hot water pipe sculpture of Mosset lies forlorn on the floor. In the mid-space a snow machine of Twan Janssen creates poetry drifting down and an artist's book of Marijke van Warmerdam invites to start reading in winter cold. A heater called 'Ardor' of Armleder can warm one up. Sylvie Fleury shows a piece with strass fake-diamonds, which glitter like little hailstones, while Orpheu de Jong's snow film rants and raves miraculously on a widescreen. In short 'Winterly cold' has pulled individual art pieces into the warmth of Galerie van Gelder.
