press release

In collaboration with Franklin Furnace and after an online application process was successfully completed by about 200 artists from around the world on White Box’ website, 10 were invited to travel to NY, live and work - transform White Box’ space into a creative asylum of ‘visa applying artists’. Selected artists were invited to spend five nights and days ‘under a state of temporary detention’. While at White Box, the ten artists were asked to develop their projects from April 24 to April 29, 2006 . Projects were required to actively challenge the concept of being a non-US citizen and the conditions of individual exclusion from cultural and socioeconomic systems or physical structures New York otherwise provides. Once an artist's project was awarded with a first prize, Asylum NYC provided the selected artist with pro-bono legal services to process and obtain an O-1 "Special Talent Artist” Visa. The successful artist will then have the opportunity to stay in the U.S. for up to three years.
