Hybrid Spaces - Corridors
Pressetext:
Casa Dell’Arte will be hosting the recent works of Azade Koker’s, who is regarded as one of the most important representatives of Contemporary Turkish art, between the dates of 4th November – 3rd December at Casa Dell’Arte Gallery. Azade Köker, Armchair, paper, 90x90x50cm, 2009
Azade Köker, depicts the hybrid space and ‘corridors’ functionally and formally which occurs in the cities -that in the development of tradition and modernism is not consecutive and under the conflicts of these two facts- with its habitants who has been consuming by the city.
In her latest works Azade Köker concerns herself with the city dwellers consumed by the city and the functionally and the formally hybrid spaces and corridors formed in the cities where tradition and modernism do not progress consecutively and where these two concepts are in conflict.
Centering around the matters leaving their mark on our day such as identicalness, difference, belonging and hybridism, the works consist of paper collages as well as sculptures and installations created by various techniques and paper materials. In the catalogue text, Levent Calikoglu, the curator chief of Istanbul Modern Contemporary Museum, describes these “Hybrid Spaces – Corridors” as:
“The exhibition emerges from the repertoire of two discourses: these transparent layers in question use as a reference the stories stuck between the crossbred identities of the cities, which have lost themselves in the dazzling and untimely transformation caused by globalization, namely the concern to become universal without being able to accomplish the Modernist social envisagement (these were called the overdue, belatedly realized modernities for some time) and the cities’ residents who can neither position nor satisfy their individual desires and wishes in the face of the physical transformation surrounding them. Therefore Azade Köker constructs her exhibition at the intersection point of a dominant and formally absolute reality and an imagination that constantly feeds on the infinite possibilities of an inner world. This exhibition should be interpreted as the reaction of the artist, who sees a crack of opportunity in the meeting point of the production practice based on a formalist, rigid, measurable, traceable and mostly geometrical foundation and the issues concerning human beings, which are uncontrollable, volatile and outside the boundaries of knowledge and in which the tension between birth and death can not be completely defined. Köker pulls one of the most popular issues of our days into art's field of practice through her observation and reflection practices and actualizes her confrontation taking strength from contemporary knowledge.
The Hybrid Spaces – Corridors exhibition, consisting of the artist’s latest works, can be viewed at Casa Dell'Arte Gallery between the dates of 4th of November and 3rd of December.
