press release

Galerie Tanja Wagner is pleased to present your secret is safe with me, Annabel Daou’s second solo exhibition at the gallery.

Daou’s work takes place at the intersection of writing, speech, and non-verbal modes of communication. Her paper and tape-based constructions, sound pieces, and performative works are sites of uneasy intimacy and self-encounter.

In this new body of work Daou explores the language of possession and desire. Using phrases that are by turns repetitious, possessive, and imperative, she negotiates the space between the things we hold close and the hold these things have on us.

The works play out through a dialectic of exposure and concealment. Words written on mending tape alternately hold together and pull apart the various surfaces. An array of rare papers is used to construct the works. Their textures and materiality evoke wood, glass shards, fabric and precious metals.

Annabel Daou, was born in Beirut, Lebanon. She lives and works in New York. Her works have been shown in the following institutions (selected): Columbus Museum, Columbus (2014); The Hafnarfjordur Centre of Culture and Fine Art, Hafnarfjörður, Drawing Room, London, Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts, New York, PS1, New York (2013); Zimmerli Art Museum (2012); Osart Gallery, Milan, University of Richmond Museums, Richmond, Virginia, Free Museum of Dallas, Dallas (2011);12th Cairo Biennale (representing the U.S.), The Baltimore Museum of Art, Baltimore (2010); The Nathan Cummings Foundation, New York (2010); Kunstwerke, Berlin/Muzeum Sztuki w Lodzi, Lodz, Poland (2008/2009); David Winton Bell Gallery, Brown University, Providence; Museo de Arte Contemporaneo Esteban Vicente, Segovia, Spain (2009); The Park Avenue Armory, New York (2008).
