Die Auseinandersetzung um den Irak-Krieg hat tiefe Gräben zwischen Europa und Amerika aufgerissen. Millionen gingen auf dem Höhepunkt massiver transatlantischer Verstimmung auf die Strasse. Unüberhörbar entlud sich die Frustration über unterschiedliche, ja gegensätzliche Politik-Ziele und Stile in Vorwürfen vom Anti-Amerikanismus hüben und Aufrufen zum „Brie-Boykott“ drüben.

Und doch: Der gegenseitigen Faszination hat das nicht viel anhaben können. Die letzte Supermacht bleibt vor allem kulturell, wissenschaftlich und wirtschaftlich ein Vorbild für weite Teile der Welt. Amerikas Anziehungskraft ist ungebrochen – traditionell auch für viele Deutsche, die den Sprung über den Atlantik wagen. Wie präsentiert sich heute das Spannungsverhältnis von Alter und Neuer Welt aus der Sicht von Insidern? Finden sie ihr Glück in den Vereinigten Staaten, ihren Platz in der neuen Heimat? „Deutsche in Amerika“ stellt Menschen an der Schnittstelle beider Welten vor, die hinter die Kulissen und Klischees gucken und zwangsläufig zu Zeugen umwälzender politischer und gesellschaftlicher Verschiebungen werden.

Ihre Innenansichten des transatlantischen Verhältnisses zeichnen das Bild einer sich ändernden Freundschaft, bei der am Schluss -- allen Schwierigkeiten zum Trotz -- doch keiner ohne den anderen kann. Die Erfahrungsberichte der Befragten gehen zusammen mit Portraitfotografien aus ihrem unmittelbaren Lebensumfeld in das Projekt ein, das als Wanderausstellung durch die USA und Deutschland angelegt ist. Ausstellungsbegleitend ist ein zweisprachiger Text-Bildband in Vorbereitung. Die Relevanz von „Deutsche in Amerika“ wird untermauert durch die wissenschaftliche Aufarbeitung des Themas Migration im Rahmen eines Master-Studiums am Kennedy-Institut der Freien Universität Berlin, während die Hochschule für Künste Bremen (Fotografie und Fototheorie) und die Fachhochschule Potsdam (Ausstellungskonzeption und Buchgestaltung) die Umsetzung der Ausstellung und des Buchs begleiten.

The dispute over the Iraq war has brought to light fundamental differences between Europe and America. At the height of the massive transatlantic disgruntlement, millions took to the streets voicing their frustration over the different, and at times opposite policies, as well as styles. Complaints were swirling over “anti-Americanism” on one side of the Atlantic, and calls for a “Brie boycott” on the other.

Yet, the mutual fascination is as strong as ever. The world’s last superpower remains above all a cultural, scientific and economic model for large parts of the world. America’s attraction is unbroken for Europeans, as well as Germans who particularly have a long tradition of venturing out and crossing the Atlantic.

How does the complex relationship between “Old” and “New World” today present itself from the insider’s view-point? Do emigrants still find happiness in the United States, and find their place in a new society? "Germans in America" introduces people at the intersection of both worlds who look behind the scenes and stereotypes, and inevitably witness cataclysmic political and social shifts.

Their insight into the transatlantic relationship paints the picture of a changing friendship, with both sides – despite all difficulties – ultimately ending up needing one another.

The interviewees’ testimony as well as portrait photographs shot in their personal environment make up the exhibition "Germans in America", which will travel throu hout the U.S. and Germany. A bilingual text/ photo book will accompany the exhibit. The project is the main framework for a master degree’s study. It will cover migration issues at the Freie Universität Berlin/Kennedy-Institute as well as the conception and design of both the exhibition and the book at the Hochschule für Künste Bremen (Photography and Photo Theory) and the Fachhochschule Potsdam (Exhibition Conception and Book Design).
