press release

opening: 30th January 2014, 7 p.m.

The exhibition presents a group of Wrocław artists originating from 1970s and 1980s, who had already been noted as a new phenomenon not only present in the Polish photography.

SKIN – the surface situated at the junction of the interior with the exterior, the shell that restricts the body and simultaneously renders it visible. The largest organ of the human body which forms a link between the organism and everything beyond it. Its biological functions designate a disturbing boundary which we are afraid of breaking, yet at the same time we crave for it to be broken; the boundary which specifies the distinction between acceptance and scandal of reality; the boundary which appoints the difference between safety, horror of spread disintegration and disease.

In the space of subtle relationships – both the intimate and social ones – skin defines a point of transgression manifested in various bodily practices: religious mortification, BDSM and user interfaces designed to perfectly suit our desires. The boundary is continuously shifted not only due to the development of science, technology and social or philosophical revolutions, but also fiction. Thus, everything that is 'human', is continually being expanded with new perspectives. Where is our skin? How much can we modify it before we lose it? And is it really ours at all?

Skin exhibition was presented in 2013 at Maison de la Photographie (Lille, France). Now, the exhibition will be presented in a new edition with new works and artists.
