press release

In collaboration with the National Museum of Iceland, the Carl-Henning Pedersen og Else Alfelts Museum and the Skovhuset Museum in Denmark, the Cobra Museum introduces a travelling exhibition of the paintings of the famous Icelandic artist, Svavar Gudnason. This is the first major exhibition of his work in the Netherlands.

Gudnason (1909-1988) was an innovator. Inspired by the European avant-garde, he introduced abstract painting to Iceland. He developed his abstract expressionist style in Paris, where he trained with Fernand L├ęger, amongst others. Gudnason participated in the activities of the experimental Cobra movement. In his own country, and certainly internationally, Gudnason is admired for his poetic style. His sensitive, optimistic use of colour and dynamic play of lines are characteristic, and with these, his work has had no parallel in capturing the mysterious landscapes of Iceland.
