press release

Hallelujah! All your contemporary art needs under one roof!

This Christmas, Temple Bar Gallery & Studios will be temporarily transformed into The BiG Store, a department store specialising in contemporary art. With prices ranging from €5 to €5,000, this is a perfect opportunity for budding and established art collectors alike to access the best new contemporary art by a wide variety of emerging and established artists.

Like the classic Marx Brothers movie from which it takes its name, The BiG Store will be an engrossingly eccentric and anarchic vision of a modern department store. This exhibition will feature specially commissioned work from over 90 of the most interesting and challenging artists from Ireland and abroad. A commercial sales floor will be temporarily installed in Temple Bar Gallery, transforming the space into a commercial gallery/shop; a disguise which aims to confront the objectives and functions of a commercial art space, as well as inviting the viewer/shopper to embark on a provocative expedition into themes of economy, art production and distribution, power, consumerism, fetishes and excess.

This year TBG&S have asked emerging curators Lola Rayne Booth and Alan Butler to take the position of ‘store managers’. They have hand-picked the best and most exciting in Irish and international contemporary art, all of which will be on show and available to buy during the last shopping week before Christmas. All artworks will be displayed and departmentalised in our easy to navigate, totally accessible gallery/sales floor/performance space. The BiG Store will be situated in the heart of Temple Bar at the cross roads of high culture and crass commercialism.

As well as providing the opportunity to view and buy the latest and most exciting in contemporary art at bargain prices, The Big Store will be offering performances, installations and interactive art experiences for your delectation. Personal shoppers will be on call to answer your every contemporary art related query. Late night opening on Thursday 20th December will also feature an evening of live performances. So be sure to brave the Christmas shoppers, come down to experience the buzz and excitement of the store and walk away with your very own unique piece of art. By doing so, you will also support one of Ireland's leading non-profit contemporary art spaces, Temple Bar Gallery and Studios.
