press release

In Longing for perfection we take stock of 21 years of collecting by the Kröller-Müller Museum under the directorship of Evert van Straaten. Acquisitions since 1991 will be presented in all the exhibition spaces, the sculpture garden and in a tent complex built specially for the occasion. Many of the pieces have hitherto rarely been shown or are even on display for the first time, such as a recently acquired spectacular installation with tigers by Cai Guo-Qiang. In addition to seeing well-known and well loved pieces again, such as Le Commencement du monde by Constantin Brancusi, the Little owl, by Pablo Picasso or The Paintings (with Us in the Nature) by Gilbert & George, exceptional works by an older generation of artists, such as Armando, Jo Baer, Louise Bourgeois, Daan van Golden, Anselm Kiefer, Matt Mullican, Bruce Nauman, herman de vries, Franz West and Rémy Zaugg, but also youngsters such as Christiaan Bastiaans, Gerard Byrne, Willie Doherty, Jan Fabre, Atelier van Lieshout, Simon Starling, Ana Maria Tavares, Joost van den Toorn and Jeff Wall, will all be on display.

Catchwords in the collection policy were: art and nature, the centre and margins, time and space, demolition and construction. The more than 500 works of art will be arranged in coherent clusters, where these themes are explored in more depth. There is particular attention for classical modern art since the late 19th century, for the constructivist utopians of the 1920s and 30s, for the ‘primitive’ art of the Inuit and the Chinese philosopher’s stones, for sculptors’ drawings, for the small and large sculptures and projects in the sculpture garden and for installations with film or video.

A richly illustrated publication will accompany the exhibition.
